5 Tips to reduce bruising post procedure

I always advice my patients that with any injection they may bruise and ideally not to have any procedures before a special event in case.

  1. There are certain medications that can increase the risk of bruising such as anti inflammatories e.g aspirin and ibuprofen. Should you decide to avoid these for 48 hours prior to treatment, if prescribed by your doctor please seek advice before doing so. Some supplements can increase the chance of bruising such as fish oils, st Johns wort, Gingko Biloba, vitamin E, garlic and turmeric. This list is not exhaustive.

2. Avoiding alcohol 24 hours prior to your appointment and after is recommended. Alcohol causes the blood vessels to dilate and can increase the chance of bleeding and bruising.

3. I advice my patients that exercise will boost the circulation and encourage blood flow so it is advisable to avoid exercise on the day of the appointment and for 24 hours post procedure.

4. Some patients decide to take arnica for a few days prior to treatment, generally 5 days. Homeopathic arnica is believed to control bruising, reduce swelling and promote recovery after local trauma. It can be taken post procedure also.

5. If you are prone to bruising the area to be injected can be iced prior to injections, the cooling prior to injection may constrict the blood vessels and may reduce the bleeding from injection site. The cooling of the skin can also provide a numbing effect prior to injections.

If you have concerns about bruising, reach out to your practitioner for advice.”

Your practitioners choice in needles/ cannula and gentle injection technique can make a difference to your experience.

Profhilo continues to be an extremely popular choice in clinic and it is for good reason. This unique product offering from Italian company IBSA is designed to improve skin laxity of the face, neck and decollete. IBSA prides themselves on producing high quality ultra pure hyaluronic acid.

What is Profhilo?

Profhilo is an innovative hyaluronic acid moisturising treatment, made with NAHYCO® technology and you can experience the benefits of this treatment in a private and discreet location in Littlehampton, West Sussex. The results of the treatment will be noticed but it can either be your secret weapon for the ageing process or a gem you share with your friends and family. Prepare to have compliments as people will notice your fresh appearance.  Patient’s feedback include, “my daughter said ah mum you look 10 years younger”, “wow you look great”, “you are glowing and look so well” ……

How does Profhilo work?

Profhilo, a unique hyaluronic acid injectable gel, has a prolonged stimulating activity on the dermal cells. When injected into the skin by a specialised technique, Profhilo stimulates the skin cell receptors to counteract skin laxity and improve & restore firmness, tone and elasticity of the skin

If you are noticing the signs of ageing, sagging of the skin and looking tired, Profhilo could be the solution you are looking for. Some men and women notice friends of a similar age faring better, could it be genetics, lifestyle or could it also be they have a helping hand?

Profhilo stimulates a multi level remodelling of the extracellular matrix (skin cells and tissue) in terms of elasticity and support, as well as maintaining and supporting the normal health & vitality of skin cells that have important functions to keep your skin healthy.

Profhilo contains a high level of hyaluronic acid, the key to skin health and radiance & your desired treatment results.

Where can I have Profhilo injected?

The most commonly treated areas include the face, neck and decollete. It can also be injected into the hands, knees and abdomen area to provide an effective treatment for skin laxity.

Profhilo is injected into the area to be treated then the product can get to work stimulating collagen and elastin and attracting water to it for the all important glow and boost you will see soon after your injections.

The structural changes occur by stimulation of 4 types of collagen and elastin by the slow release of hyaluronic acid.

This stimulation creates significant tissue improvement so it is not described as a skinbooster as it offers the additional benefit of tightening and lifting the skin.

As a stabilised product the action will last longer than that of a non stabilised gel.

Allow Profhilo to release your natural beauty within.

What makes Profhilo special?

Offering one of the highest hyaluronic acid concentrations, Profhilo boosts and hydrates the skin but also remodels ageing and sagging tissue.

The treatment is suitable for men and women as well as offering skin benefits for patients of all ages.

It is recommended to have between 2-3 sessions initially and then onto a maintenance session to ensure your results are upheld. I can advice you in clinic to the number of sessions initially recommended.

Profhilo is only provided to select pharmacies that only medical professionals are able to purchase from. As a Nurse Prescriber I am a medical professional with access to an authorised and authentic supply. The wonder of Retinol

If you have heard that retinol can reverse the signs of ageing, it is true in the right formulation and strength.

Retinol is a type of Retinoid, derived from vitamin A.

It can stimulate the growth of new skin cells which can lead to better structure of the epidermis and ultimately the dermis by enhanced collagen.

The skin cell stimulation can reveal a fresher, brighter and smoother complexion.

Retinol can reduce;

  • fine lines and wrinkles Scars Mark’s on the skin and Pore size. Skin discolouration and pigmentation
  • Retinol can improve the appearance of an uneven skin tone resulting in more even toned, brighter and healthier looking skin.

How does Retinol work?

Retinol speeds up the natural skin cell turnover. This process usually takes around 4-6 weeks.

Dull and more pigmented skin cells may respond and renew more quickly. New cells are bought to the surface thus creating a smoother and even skin tone.

What retinol formulations are available?

I often recommend the AllSkin Med retinols as they give great skin benefits and results at an affordable price.

The principal role of retinol is skin cell production and activity which, in turn, leads to better structure of the epidermis, and ultimately the dermis with enhanced collagen. When you add to that activity extra hydration with hyaluronic acid and anti-oxidant protection from vitamin E, you have an intense, highly effective regeneration serum.

ALLSKIN | MED combines two types of retinoids – one with immediate action, and one with delayed delivery via micro-sponges. This ensures fantastic results without any irritation.

ALLSKIN MED have just launched a retinol booster kit, https://www.carlypearce.co.uk/product/allskinmed-retinol-booster-kit/

This trio of products includes the Skin renewal transition cream, Extreme skin renewal gel and newly launched Heliocare Age active fluid designed with soft focus complex to create a soft focus by diffusing the light and creating an even tone to the skin. It is equipped with a triple anti ageing complex. This retinol regime comes with advice on how to introduce this new regime into your protocol without irritation and great results.

If you would like to order, you can use this free delivery code: FREEPOST21

For the Obagi fans, I recommend the Obagi Retinol which also includes hydrating Jojoba Oil and Shea butter to ensure your skin is well hydrated and soothed and allows the contained retinol to be gradually released to minimise potential irritation.

PCA Skin offers a great range of retinol products that can be tailored to your specific needs. PCA is the brand of chemical peel treatments I offer in clinic.

Their retinol brands include;

Intensive Brightening Treatment

The intensive brightening serum, this can target skin discolouration and create a more even complexion. The increase in cell turnover brightens the skin tone for a luminous, healthy glow. The skin texture and overall skin tone is improved. This unique pairing of retinol and resveratrol creates increased brilliance and antioxidant support.

Intensive Age Refining Treatment®

This stabilised retinol can strengthen skin with minimal irritation. It can target age related skin yellowing and redness. It can minimise the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and create visibly firmer skin. This advanced hydration system with soothing ingredients provides supreme long lasting hydration and offer great support to ageing skin.

Retinol Treatment for Sensitive Skin

Retinol is converted into retinoic acid in the skin, this then increases cell turnover and improve skin function, tone and texture. Skin irritation is minimised with proper encapsulation. Studies have shown to be supportive as an adjunct therapy for the improvement of rosacea symptoms. The product formulation has ingredients to reduce redness, inflammation and help soothe the skin.

Intensive Clarity Treatment®

By reducing the buildup of dead skin cells that clog up pores, this can lead to a reduction in breakouts. Fighting acne with 2% salicylic acid. With the regulation of oil production and skin calming ingredients, the skin health can be improved. Therapeutic levels of niacinamide diminish redness associated with acne. Overall skin health is supported by antioxidant in the formulation.   The PCA retinol range contains elegant and innovative products that can be tailored to your specific skincare needs. Your aesthetic goals can be achieved sooner with the correct skincare protocol.

When should I use Retinol in my skincare routine?

Retinol is a fantastic ingredient with multiple skin benefits, it is best to introduce slowly to allow your skin to adjust and minimise irritation. You can experience skin dryness as your skin gets used to the retinol. Advice can be provided alongside your products to introduce slowly. Retinol can be applied to cleansed and tone skin, it is important to ensure the skin is fully dry before applying it. It is essential to apply a generous amount of SPF to protect your newly forming skin cells as they will be more sensitive to sunlight.

How do off the shelf retinol formulations compare?

I often have patients comment that since using their skin products from off the shelf such as supermarkets or retail shops, they are not seeing the results they are hoping for. As retinol will increase the light sensitivity in new skin cells, the levels present in retail products tends to be low. The active and therapeutic retinol formulations & levels required for skin changes and improvements are only available from skin care specialists. You can be advised on how to implement into your routine and be supported along the way. Your skin can be monitored and your protocol reviewed & changed as your skin responds to your products and the demands on your skin change. For example your routine can be adapted to cope with the demands of the changing seasons.

What age should I start using Retinol?

This is a question I am often asked. Retinol can prevent and address the signs of ageing, this is often in your 20s or 30s. It is never too late to reap the benefits of introducing retinol into your skincare regime.

In clinic or by video consultation you can tell me your skin concerns and I can help make suggestions on skincare products that may help. Premium skincare is an integral part of the aesthetic treatment journey to meet your needs.

Within the Obagi360 system there is a 0.5% retinol which suit those with sensitive skin or those who are new to retinol. A stronger formulation of 1% is available to those familiar with retinoids.

The truth about chemical peels

If you have never experienced a chemical peel before, the idea of one may conjure up images of bright red skin, huge sheets of skin peeling away, grim I know. An unpleasant and even painful treatment with days of wanting to hide out.

What if I told you, it can be a very relaxing treatment that can gently exfoliate the skin and infuse it with antioxidants.

A chemical peel is a solution applied to the face to remove dead skin cells and stimulate the growth of new cells.

There are three types of chemical peels, superficial, medium, and deep.

Superficial and medium can be a very safe treatment provided they are administered correctly and by an appropriately trained practitioner.

Deep peels are used less frequently. These can require extensive downtime and do present a higher level or risk and side effects.

Why get a chemical peel?

As we get older our cell cycles within our skin start to slow down and as a result our skin can start to age, develop discolouration, and lose laxity.

The skin health can be improved and stimulated by causing minor trauma by application of a chemical peel. Repeating the process over time can create a brighter, tighter, and more youthful complexion.

The skin barrier can also be strengthened by specific targeted active ingredients and in turn reduce skin sensitivity.

Peels can lift and reduce discoloration, making them a popular choice of those who have pigmentation on their skin.

Chemical peels can play an important in helping acne prone skin by reducing sebum and eliminating pore build up resulting in a skin clarifying effect.

My personal brand of choice for chemical peels is PCA skin. The company was founded 31 years ago, and they believe in a “progressive, not aggressive approach when treating skin”.

Using carefully tailored formulas to increase cell turnover by stimulating the cell cycles in the skin to create new skin cells and in turn reducing fine lines and wrinkles, tackling pigmentation, and improving skin clarity by reducing breakouts.

This echoes what I stated earlier in relation to having extremely tolerable treatments that can provide impressive skin improvements. That is why chemical peels are one of the most popular skin treatments I offer and form an essential part of a patient protocol to achieve skin confidence.

If you would like to learn more about chemical peels, you are welcome to book a consultation and see what they can do for you. You can tell me your skin concerns and we can discuss a treatment protocol to suit your schedule.

DIY Botox kits on the internet and why you should protect yourself and avoid

The treatment commonly referred to as Botox or anti-wrinkle injections.

Botox is a manufacturer name. A few manufacturers you may hear of include Bocouture, Azzalure, and Zeomin. The products are all comprised of the Botulinum toxin molecule but have slightly different manufacturer processes. They all work in the same way.

Botulinum neurotoxin type A is a muscle relaxant, it works by stopping the release of acetylcholine. Acetylcholine is a neurotransmitter and neuromodulator. It works by sending signals between nerves. This action would normally result in the contraction of muscles.

The injection of the Botulinum Toxin A results in a 4-step process which results in the light chain of the toxin molecule specifically cleaving the target protein (Snap 25) that is essential for the release of acetylcholine and muscle contraction.

The recovery of this process to again release Acetylcholine normally takes between 3-4 months and that’s usually how long you can expect the treatment duration to be. In time this duration may increase with regular treatment intervals as the muscle’s injected may reduce in size and strength.

We now live in a world where you can buy my DIY Botox kits off the internet, but should anyone be attempting to source this drug from unreputable sources?

This alarming trend has resulted in people buying unknown product from the internet and injecting into their own faces. According to sources a diagram with the product instructs where to inject. This presents a multitude of risks.
When injecting anti-wrinkle injections, there are very small amounts injected hence the need for very precise injection techniques. The injector needs to have a good awareness of anatomy and physiology to inject and deliver the product where is necessary. The dose required varies from person to person and a very bespoke prescriptive treatment is required. In the hands of an unexperienced injector, it is possible to cause the drooping of the eyelid, known as an eyelid ptosis, it is possible to cause a Brow to drop, known as an eyebrow ptosis.

By contrast in an experienced hand, it may be possible to balance out asymmetries on the face for example if a patient has one Brow higher than the other, it may be possible to balance this out. Patients with heavy eyelids may notice an elevation in their eyelids and brows which can give their face and eyes a more alert & refreshed look to them. This may result in the patient being able to see better as their eyes are more open.

It is possible to cause puffy eyes by affecting the lymphatic drainage of the eye by inaccurate injection technique and/or dosing. The desired effect of the treatment is to look less tired and refreshed. In the event of the causing fluid retention (oedema) around the eyes the patient can look extremely tired and worse off than before their injections. A trained practitioner can assess correctly whether treatment is appropriate and if so, administer a suitable dose in the correct location.

What’s in the vial?

So you’ve ordered off the internet and a vial of something has come through. How do you know if it’s going to contain the botulinum toxin molecule? How do you know it’s going to be in date? How do you know if it’s sterile and has been stored correctly? Most of the toxin vials are temperature sensitive and need to be delivered in a cold chain delivery to protect the potency of the product, incorrect storage will affect the drug efficacy and treatment results. What would happen if injecting the unknown substance resulted in an allergic reaction, this could be life threatening.
Hopefully with a consideration of what dangers this can present, people will think before purchasing and instead visit a reputable and experienced Medical Practitioner for treatment.

Things to consider when booking in for an Anti-wrinkle session

It is advisable to seek treatment from a medical professional, a nurse, doctor, or dentist. You can be assured the medical practitioner will have access to a pharmacy and authenticate stock of the Botulinum toxin for your treatment.

It is a legal requirement for you to be assessed by Medical Prescriber such as a nurse Prescriber, doctor, or dentist prior to treatment. If you have NOT seen a medical Prescriber before your session, then your suitability for treatment has not been assessed and the drug has not been prescribed for you. It is a prescription only drug.

You can ask to see before and after photos to give an idea of what may be achievable with treatment. Results may vary from person to person as the treatment is not an exact science.

Do you know how long the practitioner has been providing injectable treatments and the number of treatments they have undertaken?

Has there been a detailed discussion of risks and benefits of the treatment, and have you had the time to discuss any concerns?

It is a good idea to have your consultation and take the time to think over the information given.

Once you have decided to book your treatment it is encouraged to book a review appointment. This is an opportunity for you to give your practitioner feedback on your results and evaluate together if a further dose is necessary to improve your treatment outcomes.

Have you been given contact details in case you have any questions for your practitioner post procedure?

The results of anti-wrinkle injections can be so positive and completely change how a person feels about themselves. Do your research and feel confident in making an informed decision if the treatment is right for you.

The truth about home needling

With the rise in popularity of micro needling – or derma-rolling as it’s also known – aesthetic nurse prescriber, Carly Pearce, cautions against DIY options

There has been great interest in the use of dermarollers and their benefit to the skin, but be warned, home dermarollers should be purchased with caution.

There are varying qualities available on the market and you need to check that the device is sterile, that the needles are the correct length and are of a high quality.

After a quick search for dermarollers online, I found a triple pack for £13.99. The needle depths of the rollers in the pack were 0.5mm, 1.0mm and 1.5mm. And there are a few issues here. I was trained to recommend home roller devices of 0.1 and 0.3mm needle depth. A deeper needle is not appropriate for home use. Without the correct sterilisation of your skin and the roller itself, you could cause an infection. Without adopting the correct technique and using the deeper needles, you may cause an increased level of trauma and even damage skin. This could result in scarring and pigmentation.

There is a precise technique to rollering in order to achieve optimum results and to perform the procedure safely. The devices I saw are not sterile so you have no idea how they are made or where they have been stored – so who knows what bacteria you could potentially be needling into your skin.

As the devices are extremely cheap, it is highly unlikely that the needles will be of a good quality.

However, a high quality home dermaroller device might be of benefit to the skin by stimulating the epidermis with a short needle length and increasing the absorption of tailored products for your skin. It is important to know what products are suitable for use post procedure as incorrect product choice could result in redness, stinging and evident skin irritation. If you need advice on a suitable home roller, I know an ethical company that uses German engineering to produce high quality devices so please send me a message.

What is Micro needling and how can it benefit your skin?

Derma roller or Electronic Derma stamp (EDS).

This treatment creates vastly different effects to a home roller. The needle depths are greater, and this accounts for the increased effect on the skin and the changes that follow post treatment.

The rollering process creates micro channels of needling, causing a small trauma to the skin to then wake up the cell cycles that go on to stimulate collagen production. This process takes time and a protocol of three treatments – six to eight weeks apart is normally recommended.

If the person has scarring or pigmentation, more sessions may be beneficial. There are again varying levels of quality for clinic devices. Try not to be lured by the discounts – it is your skin, and you want it to look it’s best. Think sterility, quality of roller and the experience of the practitioner.

Micro needling can be performed on most areas; the most treated areas being the face, neck, décolleté and hands for rejuvenation of fine lines and wrinkles, pigmentation, and acne scarring.

I have used the Genuine Derma roller for the treatment of stretch marks and have seen dramatic improvements in them. I always point out at the consultation that there are no guarantees on treatment results and the time the results take may vary from person to person.

My clinical experience has been hugely positive in helping clients change their confidence levels by improving acne scarring, pigmentation, stretch marks and creating luminous and glowing skin.

In the event of treating acne scarring, I have found the trauma caused by the needling process, encourages the production of collagen which can flatten out the ice pick scarring. This gives the skin a smoother appearance and it has been apparent in clinic that the red coloration left from where blemishes were in the past has improved and resulted in greater skin clarity. The treatment results can have a great effect on the patient’s confidence and self-esteem.

The EDS or Electronic Derma stamp is the next generation in micro needling and is a machine version of the Derma roller. It provides a more comfortable treatment and is one that can be adapted to the different areas of the skin or according to skin need and patient comfort levels.

You can expect post needling for your skin to feel warm, tight and appear red. This will normally resolve within 48 hours. Bespoke products are added to your skin post needling. There is increased absorption of the products due to the micro channels that have been created in the skin.

In clinic you can have bespoke protocols to intensify your results, this may include chemical peel treatments, Neo elegance advanced LED light and skin boosters. There is great truth that great skin is created by appointment.

Patients often report people telling they people comment that they look well rested, glowing and refreshed. From patient feedback derma rollering is a treatment where no one knows but everyone notices.
