This is a topic that I talk about often in my clinic.
Menopause can have a huge impact on women, they sometimes tell me they feel they have aged overnight, they do not recognise themselves when they look in the mirror and they have lost confidence.
The menopause is when a woman stops having periods for 12 consecutive months and usually occurs between 45 to 55 years of age. The average age is 51.
The decline in oestrogen in the body is naturally occurring and is responsible for the familiar menopause symptoms such as hot flushes, nights sweats, insomnia and vaginal dryness. As if that is not enough to contend with, it can have a significant impact on the skin.
Women often report that there is a great inconsistency in the level of help & support available to them and that of family members & friends.
I enjoy helping and supporting women with menopause & giving them the tools to help tackle the affects. Having the right help and support can really influence the experience women have & can have a positive impact on their confidence levels.
Now for a brief overview of the science of Oestrogen, it is a term used for a group of three steroid hormones, estriol, estrone and estradial & are produced by the ovaries.
The predominant Oestrogen steroid hormone, Estradial has over 400 functions in the female body and is produced from puberty.
Oestrogens are responsible for the development of the reproductive organs, controlling the menstrual cycle, creating a suitable environment for egg fertilisation and implantation.
Furthermore, Oestrogen affects virtually all body systems including lungs, cardiovascular, skeletal, gastro intestinal, central nervous systems and skin.
Oestrogen also has an effect on the skeletal muscle, liver and adipose tissue to influence glucose metabolism. This explains why the decline in oestrogen affects women in many ways.
The symptoms tend to develop over a number of years prior to the menopause as the oestrogen levels begin to decline, the peri menopause. It usually starts when women are in their 40s and continues up to the menopause.
Clinical studies have shown that approximately 30% of collagen is lost in the first 5 years after menopause. That staggering amount explains the dramatic changes women often experience. The loss of collagen doubles up to 2.1% per year, post menopausal for subsequent years.
This rapid collagen breakdown and acceleration of skin ageing is the most significant a woman will experience in her life.
In the clinic, I work together with women to devise a treatment and skincare plan with the aim of achieving skin confidence.
I love hearing they look like themselves again and feel their confidence returning. If you are peri menopausal or beyond reach out for support & guidance. It may make all the difference to your experience.
What can be done to combat this acceleration in skin ageing? I will focus on a home skincare protocol.
There are clinic treatments that can help support and stimulate your skin. Having a bespoke skincare protocol for menopausal skin will improve your treatment response.
I recommend Emepelle and its MEP technology to rejuvenate, restore and rebalance skin affected by menopause.
MEP (methyl estradiolpropanoate ), a new class of cosmeceutical ingredient, is a non hormonal oestrogen receptor.
It works on activating new Oestrogen receptors. Clinically proven to restore natural skin function and activity safely to improve elasticity, dryness, skin thinning, dullness & wrinkles.
This innovative MEP not only works only on the skin cells it is applied to topically but if it enters the bloodstream it converts to an inactive metabolite. This allows the positive effects on the skin without the risk of side effects elsewhere in the body.
The Emepelle protocol is packed with a synergistic blend of advanced ingredients in this powerful product duo to simplify your skincare routine.
The Emepelle serum is a light and silky formulation to reinvigorate & energise the skin. It helps to reinvigorate the skin’s natural functions
Its fast absorption makes it perfect for morning use. This oil free formulation combines the MEP technology with peptides, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid with powerful antioxidant activity.
The blend of antioxidants in the serum include vitamin C, Vitamin E and ferulic acid. Vitamin C is a powerhouse of skin benefits including helping fibroblasts make collagen, protect vitamin A against oxidation, and assist conversion of vitamin E to its active form to prevent melanin formulation. Melanin is a natural skin pigment.
Vitamin E protects against lipid peroxidation, a process that can lead to skin cell damage.
Ferulic acid when exposed to UV rays has an increased effect on antioxidant potency, it helps to prevent cell damage from UV radiation by neutralising harmful radicals. Ferulic acid boosts vitamin C activity.
The peptides help combat oxidative stress and improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and skin laxity.
Niacinamide helps boost the skin’s barrier function, brightens appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, improves skin clarity and tone and further antioxidant protection. Hyaluronic acid improves skin hydration and helps plump the skin.
The next product is the luxurious Empelle night cream. It is highly moisturising, nourishing and restorative.
It combines high strength, innovative MEP technology with potent retinoid combination, peptides, niacinamide and intense moisturisers. It utilises the skin’s night time repair activity to help restore skin vitality & luminosity.
The Retinoid complex helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles & sun damage. It decreases skin roughness, aids nightly rejuvenation to reveal skin radiance & glow.
The high content of Niacinamide is an essential ingredient due to its vast skin benefits.
The peptides combat oxidative stress, improve skin laxity, fine lines and wrinkles & powerful combination of skin hydrators and plumpers to help maintain a healthy skin barrier, leaving the skin feeling soft, supple and hydrated.
In addition to the Emepelle duo I recommend a gentle cleanser that will leave the skin soft and clean & protect the skin barrier. Harsh cleansers can harm the skin barrier and dehydrate the skin. Without a good cleanser, the ingredients in your skin care may not be able to be absorbed so it is worth investing in a good quality cleanser. I always recommend to all my patient’s to use an SPF. I ask them to think of an SPF as daylight protection and should ideally be used all year round not just on sunny days.
Emepelle allows women to feel more like themselves again when looking in the mirror. An innovative duo that promotes skin confidence and pro ageing.
